This hands-on seminar meets weekly at Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT, to discuss recent and classic scholarship on French impressionism and American collecting. As the course proceeds through its weekly topics—which include Manet, Monet, Degas, Cassatt, and Whistler—the seminar meetings will take advantage of their physical proximity to famous artworks at Hill-stead by staging discussions directly in front of pictures in the collection. To complement this focus on specific images and specific artists, discussions will be dedicated to the place of impressionism in different types of art museums— specifically in the encyclopedic art museum, the national art museum, and the collection museum—and to the reception of French impressionism by American artists. One week will concentrate on the theme of the rotating exhibition in Hill-stead’s new gallery space, which, in fall 2025, will focus on the topic of Japonisme. As a culminating assignment, students from Trinity College have the option to assist on curatorial research and planning for a possible future exhibition. To further the professionalizing goals of the seminar itself, enrollment will be split between students from Trinity College and Museum Guides and Educators from Hill-stead. Up to 6 Trinity students can participate each semester and up to 6 guides can attend each session.
