This course looks at the social movements and cultural production of European women of African descent, with a particular focus on the diasporas of West and North Africa in Western Europe. In addition to theoretical, historical, and critical sources, readings will include novels, poetry, and films. Topics will include the conceptualization of race and gender in Europe, African women’s experiences of migration, “Afro-European” as a category, decolonial feminism, the influence of slavery on gender, and the relationship between activism and literature.
