In this course, we will explore what happens at the intersections between writing and mindfulness. We will approach this inquiry in several different ways: through a variety of mindfulness practices, through a variety of writing practices, and through the reading and discussion of, and writing about, texts about mindfulness from practitioners, artists, and critics.
In Part I of the course, we will engage experientially and with an open mind in a variety of mindfulness and writing practices. Our intention will be to experience and practice mindfulness, and mindful writing, and to notice how these practices influence the nature of our writing. In Part II of the course, we will introduce a more academic, critical lens and use critical writing to analyze the way mindfulness does or might show up in present-day American culture.
My goal is that you will leave the course with a deeper understanding of yourself, your writing practice(s), and the world around you, and that you will have a new composite mindfulness framework, drawn together from course texts and discussion, through which to bring mindful noticing and examination to the world around you.
