A survey of the civilizations of ancient Greece, from the Neolithic Period through Greece’s absorption into the Roman Empire. Topics to be covered include historical writing (e.g., Herodotus, Thucydides), literary works (e.g., Homer’s Iliadand Odyssey, Plato’s Republic), and consideration of archaeological remains (e.g., vases, architecture) in their social and cultural contexts. We will also consider the place of ancient Greece in the modern imagination.
